The significant role of teachers in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) becomes evident through their capacity to create educational environments that foster meaningful impact. Given the sensitivity of the issue at both individual and societal levels, it is crucial to implement various methods from the early stages of teacher education to teach SDGs and enhance teachers’ competencies in this area.
The primary aim of this study is to adapt the Sustainable Competency Levels Scale for Physical Education Teacher Candidates into Turkish, to assess the sustainable competency levels of physical education teacher candidates studying at universities in Türkiye, to identify the factors affecting these levels, and to provide a validated and reliable instrument that can serve as a foundation for future research in the field.
A total of 330 voluntary participants—132 females and 198 males—were included in the study through a convenience sampling method. The translation-back translation technique was employed during the Turkish adaptation process of the scale. Reliability and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on the data collected during the research.
The chi-square goodness-of-fit index was found to be 3.43. Considering the sample size of the current study (n = 360), this result aligns with values reported in the literature. The RMSEA value was determined as .079, the SRMR value as .059, and the CFI and NNFI values were found to be .91 and .90, respectively. Furthermore, the GFI value was .87 and the IFI value was .91.
The adaptation of the "Sustainable Competency Scale for Physical Education and Sports Teacher Candidates" into Turkish culture was successfully completed, comprising 20 items under three factors: social, economic, and environmental. Accordingly, the adapted scale is suitable for administration to all individuals who are physical education and sports teacher candidates.
