The purpose of this study is to examine the narcissistic tendencies of individuals participating in recreational sports through the dimensions of “narcissistic admiration” and “narcissistic rivalry,” and to evaluate the relationship of these tendencies with demographic variables and motivations for participation in recreational sports activities. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach within the framework of the relational survey model, and the data were collected through the NHR-16 scale measuring narcissistic admiration and rivalry factors. The findings revealed that participants’ levels of narcissistic admiration were relatively high, whereas their levels of narcissistic rivalry were lower. Significant differences were identified based on gender, age, and education variables; in particular, males, younger individuals, and those with lower educational attainment exhibited higher scores in negatively oriented narcissistic rivalry. Additionally, it was observed that narcissistic tendencies were more pronounced among individuals with appearance-focused motivations. The findings suggest that recreational sports may function as a mitigating factor for externally oriented and maladaptive narcissistic tendencies. In this context, participation in recreational sports is considered to play a supportive role in maintaining psychosocial balance. Consequently, it is noteworthy that recreational sports might serve as a therapeutic tool for individuals with vulnerable and pathological narcissistic structures.
