    Abstract

    Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the mediating role of the fear of missing out (FoMO) in the relationship between perfectionism and sleep quality in student-athletes, and the effect of environmental factors such as social media usage time in this process.

Method: The study utilized the relational survey model, a quantitative research method. The participants consisted of 239 student-athletes (112 male, 127 female) studying at Faculties of Sports Sciences in Turkey during the 2025-2026 academic year. Data collection involved a Personal Information Form, the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Cumhuriyet Subjective Sleep Quality Scale, and the Fear of Missing Out in Social Environments Scale. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 25.0 software package and the PROCESS Macro extension. Prior to analysis, the conformity of the dataset to normal distribution was tested by examining skewness and kurtosis coefficients; observing that the values were within normal distribution limits, it was decided to use parametric tests. Accordingly, the Independent Samples t-Test was used to examine differences between groups based on independent variables, and the Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to determine the direction and level of relationships between variables. Hayes' PROCESS Macro (Model 4) extension and the Bootstrapping technique (95% confidence interval) were utilized to test the mediating role of FoMO in the relationship between perfectionism and sleep quality and to examine the significance of indirect effects.

Findings: The results indicated that male athletes scored significantly higher in parental expectations and parental criticism dimensions compared to females, while female athletes had significantly lower sleep quality than males. According to athletic status, national athletes were found to have higher sleep quality than non-national athletes. Correlation analyses revealed that as perfectionism increased, sleep quality decreased and FoMO levels increased. However, in the established mediation model, it was determined that the fear of missing out did not assume a significant mediating role between perfectionism and sleep quality. Among the control variables included in the model, only daily social media usage time was found to be a significant and strong predictor of sleep quality.

Conclusions: In conclusion, perfectionism negatively affects sleep quality in student-athletes; however, this effect occurs not through FoMO, but directly through personality traits and behavioral factors such as social media usage time.
