Abstract
A positive relationship between individuals and the environment and nature helps prevent stress, which is considered the starting point of many diseases, or reduces its symptoms. In this study, participants engaged in nature-based activities within the scope of ecotherapy practices. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of nature activities on the stress levels of individuals with chronic mental illness. Method In this study, a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was used to evaluate the effect of nature activities on the stress levels of individuals with chronic mental illness registered at the Community Mental Health Center (TRSM). The experimental group consisted of 7 participants and the control group consisted of 5 participants. According to the pretest–posttest scores of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the power analysis value calculated for the sample size was found to be 0.82 (d > 0.80 indicating a strong effect size). After the nature activities, a statistically significant difference was found only in the experimental group between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the DI-Self subscale, which includes items measuring nature connection and awareness (p = 0.042). A statistically significant difference was found between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the control group on the perceived stress subscale of the PSS (p = 0.039). In addition, a statistically significant difference was found between the posttest mean scores of the experimental and control groups on the total PSS scale (U = −2.359, p = 0.018). Although statistically significant differences were not obtained in all measurements, nature activities were found to have an effect on stress levels and to strengthen participants’ relationship with nature. These findings indicate that spending time in nature may help regulate stress levels. According to the results of this study, nature-based activities positively affected the experimental group and helped participants manage their stress levels. However, in the control group, the absence of nature-based interventions, along with the COVID-19 pandemic and related activity restrictions, led to a significant increase in stress levels.
