Appearance of catharsis phenomenon in the arabesque genre

Abstract

This study was composed to tackle the appearange of catharsis, psychologic and ethic phenomenon, in arabesque music that is emerged after 1960 in Turkey. At first, catharsis was defined in philosophical and artistic meaning as soul’s pufication from its passion by means of sensation of pathos and fear in tragedy art. After, it was determined that catharsis phenomenon also becomes owing to music and its elements such as melody, ritim, harmony, lyrics provide to become the catharsis phenomenon by means of tension and relaxation circumstance which contain knot and solution. It was determined that not only suburb culture, which is resulted from rapid and unplanned urbanization, but also Middle Eastern’s deep-rooted musical tradition is reason of appearing the arabesque music as a sociological affair; it was also determined that sadness and pain arising from rapid and unplanned urbanization provided cathartic quality to arabesque. Lastly, appearing of catharsis in the two main elements of arabesque music, lyrics and melody, was analysed.
